Changing Licence Class - Associate to Associate Broker

A real estate broker’s responsibilities, as outlined in the Real Estate Act and Rules, are different from those of an associate and require additional education. Real estate industry professionals may complete the broker qualifications, but not become registered as a broker. In this case, the individual may wish to register as an associate broker.

Once a real estate associate has completed the following requirements, he or she may become licensed as an associate broker:

  • Successful completion of the Real Estate Associates Program or equivalent;
  • Successful completion of the Real Estate Brokers Program;
  • Score 70% or higher on the Real Estate Brokers Program final exam; and,
  • Have at least two years of industry experience as a licensed real estate industry professional within the past five years.

As part of the requirements to hold an associate broker or broker licence, an individual must be authorized for all real estate activities (i.e. residential, commercial, rural and property management). The table below identifies the education requirements that an individual must complete to become authorized for all real estate activities. These requirements vary based on which Real Estate Associates Program (REAP) the individual completed in order to become licensed as an associate.

The industry professional must provide an original Associate/Associate Broker Registration Cancellation form and an original Associate/Associate Broker Application for Registration to his or her broker for processing. The broker is responsible for processing the cancellation and registration for the industry professional, unless the industry professional has answered “YES” to any of the questions in section C (Information Respecting Suitability) of the Associate/Associate Broker Application for Registration form, in which case RECA must process the application. The individual must also pay the required processing fee through the brokerage’s RECA Online account. Please see the current fee schedule for information about the required fee.

Industry professionals can confirm that their licence class has been changed using the “Search for an Industry Professional” function on RECA’s website. By searching for their own name, they can determine if the new class of licence (associate broker) appears in the appropriate box.
